Tatiana Fraser
Executive Director, Girls Action Foundation
2010 Top 100 Winner

Tatiana Fraser is Co-founder and the Executive Director of Girls Action Foundation. Throughout her career, Tatiana has contributed greatly to the expansion of all-girls empowerment and leadership programs across Canada. A central focus of Ms. Fraser's work is creating a movement that is inclusive of girls and women from marginalized communities.

Growing exponentially from the first summer camp for girls in Ottawa, Girls Action now reaches 60,000 young women and girls annually, particularly in under-represented communities including Northern, racialised, low-income, Aboriginal and immigrant communities. Girls Action Foundation has provided funds or training to over 100 start-up girls' programs in communities across Canada, and under her leadership, has created an unprecedented network of organizations dedicated to advancing girls' equality, which now counts over 210 member-organizations in all regions of Canada.

Tatiana has worked tirelessly to "flip the script" about girls: they are not just victims or passive recipients, they are powerful change agents. Born of her vision that young women are not only future leaders, but are actually leading change now, having a positive impact on their communities as we speak; she spearheaded the creation of the ELLE Project. This national leadership training and mentorship program provides skill-building and a network of peers and mentors to fuel young women's social entrepreneurship.

One of many innovative programs founded by Tatiana is the national girls' Day of Action, held on February 14. Since 2005, this annual event has sparked girls and young women to organize over 120 local actions to address challenges they face, such as violence prevention, mental health, sexual health, and representations of girls in the media, in communities across Canada.

Ms. Fraser serves the community by regularly collaborating on national projects which advance girls' and women's leadership and representation. She is an invited member of the McConnell Foundation's Social Innovation Lab, a national network of innovative organizations advancing social development in Canada. She has provided consultation to many projects, including the United Nations Association of Canada project, Healthy Children, Healthy Communities; the Alliance of Canadian Research Centres on Violence for a Canada-wide study of violence in girls' lives; the Women's Constitutions and Democratic Renewal Conference (2007); and Determinants of Health of the Girl Child, a study conducted by the Canadian Institute for Child Health. In 2000, Ms. Fraser was a Canadian delegate at the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Ms. Fraser is deeply committed to collaboration and convening cross-sectoral exchange because more is achieved for girls by working together. She organized the first Canadian conference on girls and girlhoods in 2003, and regularly collaborates with other national organizations to advance girls' and women's equality and leadership. Nilofer Merchant Nilofer Merchant
Corporate Director, Published Author and Business Strategist

Nilofer Merchant is a corporate director, published author, and business strategist. She has earned a reputation for enabling companies to win, if not dominate their markets.

Her expertise comes from growing companies, small and big. She has served as CEO, Fortune 500 leader, and entrepreneur. She blends a bunch of important stuff -- strategic models, 20 years of experience in startups and multi-billion dollar global enterprises, market insights, and a basic understanding of humans – to create solutions that work. Merchant founded and served as CEO of a global multi-million dollar services company, selling 80% of business. As VP of a web application start-up, she enabled the German company to do a successful exit. Merchant has profit and loss (P&L) experience at a public Fortune 500 Company. Board of Directors, and CEOs at Global Fortune 1000 enterprises have turned to her to make mission-critical decisions.

Merchant is the author of The New How, a critically acclaimed 2010 book on collaborative work and direction setting that helps organizations act flat to be nimble. She is a Harvard Business Review (HBR) writer on the topics of culture, innovation, and strategy where she transfers lessons from both her successes and failures. She’s been profiled by the Wall Street Journal, and published by BusinessWeek, Forbes, and AdAge. She is a contributing author to three books; two on social media marketing, and one on wisdom leadership. She is ranked and regarded in the top .01% of social media. Nilofer designed a trademarked framework for making tough decisions, called MurderBoarding™.

Founder and CEO of Rubicon Consulting, her strategic insight was sought after and profitably deployed by Adobe, Symantec, Symbian, HP, Openwave, Logitech, and VMWare. Her firm served four inflection points of growth: finding new markets, go-to-market strategies, defending against competitors, and optimizing revenue. Rubicon created the $200M go-to-market (GTM) strategy for VMware to enter the SMB space, designed the GTM for Adobe’s now $180M Education business, and identified a new $2B mobile data market for Openwave’s pivot, amongst others. And, Merchant is one of the few people who can say they’ve fought a competitive battle against Microsoft and won, for Symantec’s Anti-Virus $2.1B annual business. She has personally launched more than 100 products, netting $18B in sales, with expertise in Europe and US markets. These experiences point to one thing: explosive global growth with superior shareholder value.

Prior to her own start-up, Merchant drove pricing, channel strategy, product launches, vertical segments, and marketing investment decisions for the Americas division of Autodesk (ADSK). She grew the business by nearly 50% from $200M to $310M in 20 months, including a major product diversification strategy. As VP of Sales & Marketing for GoLive, a start-up later acquired by Adobe (ADBE), she grew revenues from zero to $4.5M in 16 months. Merchant received industry recognition for an ingenious channel sales program she developed that grew Apple (APPL) server sales at nearly 900% CAGR over 2 years from $2 to $180M. She’s led start-ups, high-growth performance, and turnaround situations.

Merchant has extensive fiduciary and governance experience. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Ambassadors Group (EPAX) and of the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University. Appointed by Governor Deukmejian, she served on the California Community College Board of Trustees overseeing both budget and staff and the passage of AB1725 legislation. She has served on the Board of the Northwest YMCA where she led a $2M capital campaign. In addition, in five years with Vistage, a CEO peer advisory board, Merchant was twice voted “Most Valuable Player” in a blind vote by her fellow CEOs.

Besides serving as a corporate director, she writes for Harvard Business Review, advises entrepreneurs, speaks professionally, and teaches at Stanford & Santa Clara University. She holds an M.B.A. from Santa Clara, and a B.S. in Economics from University of San Francisco. She, her husband, and son live in Los Gatos, CA.
